In recent years, the gaming industry has flourished, with Reuters’s report estimating the industry to surpass the $200 billion mark by 2023. Gaming over the years has matured, with different genres. With COVID-19 putting people locked up in their homes, games became a primary entertainment source. Games today have serious players, with many people taking part in open-ended worlds, combining the virtual existence and the real one.
My Neighbor Alice: A Virtual Paradise
Combining the building of virtual worlds and blockchain, My Neighbor Alice is a decentralized game that allows its players to buy and build complete virtual islands. The players can create whole civilizations on the islands and interact with other islands operated by other players.
The gameplay is set in the fantasy Lummelunda archipelago, a chain of islands where humans and different animals co-exist in peace. They can interact and work together to bring economic prosperity to the islands. Activities that players can perform include farming, fishing, and beekeeping. The protagonist, Alice, can meet neighbors and interact with them, including accomplishing different tasks and trades.
Each piece of the island can be customized and decorated with different items and even alter the landscape.
Blockchain, the Power Behind Alice
My Neighbor Alice is powered by decentralized blockchain technology. Each item in the game is represented with a Non-Fungible Token (NFT). Each item, therefore, is unique, and no two items are similar. Players can buy and trade the NFTs to decorate their islands. NFTs represent buildings, animals, vegetation, furniture, islands, and much more.
Apart from the NFT, the game has its own native ALICE token. The ERC-20 compliant token will help players in different aspects, such as:
- As a value transfer token,
- Purchasing land and NFTs,
- Staking for rewards,
- Winning ALICE tokens for completing tasks.
Like any true blockchain crypto token, ALICE will be in limited supply, with a total of 100 million that will ever be created. Out of these, 21 million will be offered for adopters during sales. Different allocations exist for other game functions, such as 8 million kept for rewards on task completion, 20 million for staking rewards, etc.
My Neighbor Alice is not just about gaming but for a complete financial ecosystem. Based on decentralized finance (DeFi), there are three ways for players to earn on the side:
- Yield Farming: by staking their ALICE tokens, players will be rewarded with more ALICE tokens, increasing their holdings.
- Collateral: Every time a player purchase an NFT, a small portion of the value will be locked as collateral. The gamer will have the option to sell off the NFT further or burn it for the locked value.
- Renting: NFTs can also be loaned to other players, ensuring that the NFT remains in the owner’s control and still earn from it.
As a blockchain-based game, My Neighbor Alice is a game that is not controlled by the developers but the players themselves. Initially, the developers will be handling the game and its development, but as players mature, they will increasingly be given authority on the game ecosystem’s direction.
This is achieved through the concept of a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). Governed by the Community Council, they will take part in handling and finding solutions for the in-game issues and eventually have a say in the future proposals of game development and even allocation of resources.
Essentially, every ALICE token holder will have a say through the right to vote. The membership to the council will be voluntary, allowing hardcore games just to enjoy the virtual islands. Apart from this, there are a few other Community Council principles. The whole DAO will be democratic, with not only gamer or entity holding power over the other. The rule of the majority will follow.
The council members will be expected to work independently, without any third-party influence. The members will also work together as a team, cooperating and working towards improving the game.
Blockchain Background Working
My Neighbor Alice is a game that runs on a blockchain, but only at the backend, allowing players to enjoy the game even if they don’t know the technology. Chromia Blockchain will be the first layer, holding the complete game infrastructure. On the second layer, the front end workings will be hosted through the Unity gaming engine, handling the web-based interface players will see.
The game already has an MVP ready, and a demo can be seen here. DAO Maker, the leading service provider for blockchain companies, runs the public sale for My Neighbor Alice. The tokens are offered via DAO Maker’s successful sales model: Strong Holder Offering – a classic ICO’s evolution. This means that only users with a proven ERC-20 wallet history are qualified to exclusively buy this token. The Guidelines for the My Neighbor Alice SHO and the Research Page by DAO Maker.
